Coro degli Etruschi

Il primo motivo dell’aggregazione è stato quello di riproporre l’usanza del "maggio" – canto augurale di primavera - che ancor oggi si presenta con le sue molteplici facce, ma che in quegli anni rischiava di scomparire completamente. Il Coro è divenuto pertanto uno dei rari esempi del folclore canoro che si lega direttamente al filone della tradizione popolare, mantenendo viva l’autenticità del tessuto culturale del mondo contadino ed operaio di questa terra, dell’impegno civile e democratico della sua gente. Dopo aver compiuto una ricerca sulle espressioni musicali della maremma grossetana, pubblicata nel libro "Canti popolari in Maremma" (a cura di Corrado Barontini, Morbello Vergari, Finisio Manfucci), dal 1974 ripropone con i suoi spettacoli, un repertorio vasto di canti popolari, musica da ballo, poesie in vernacolo, mantenendo nella comunicazione il carattere tradizionale dei pezzi proposti.

Si tratta di serenate, rispetti d’amore, stornelli, canti d’osteria, canzoni a contenuto sociale, canti narrativi, rappresentazioni del calendario contadino. La riproposta canora si completa con alcuni brani innovativi composti nella seconda metà del ‘900, che rendono conto della forte radicalità della cultura tradizionale di questo territorio.

Fisarmonica e chitarra classica insieme alla riproposta di strumenti antichi e desueti quali le nacchere, fanno da sfondo alla interpretazione dei pezzi musicali. Il gruppo che ha partecipato alle più importanti rassegne etnomusicali in Italia, Svizzera , Austria e a trasmissioni televisive, si compone attualmente di una decina di elementi.

Founded in the early 70’s by folk poet Morbello Vergari (who died in 1989), the group performs the traditional music and songs of the Maremma, in other words, the liveliest and most authentic aspects of Tuscan folklore.

The main reason behind their association was to revive the use of the traditional “maggio” or May customs – portents of good omen and the spring – that can still, even today, be found in a wide variety of forms. At the time, however, there was a risk of them disappearing completely. Therefore the Choir can now offer rare examples of sung folklore, linked directly to a series of popular traditions, that not only keep the authenticity of the local cultural tissue alive, but also the old farming and labouring customs together with the civic and democratic commitment of the people. After carrying out research into the musical expressions of the Grosseto Maremma, published in “Canti popolari in Maremma” (Folk songs of the Maremma), (curators: Corrado Barontini, Morbello Vergari, Finisio Manfucci), since 1974 the group has performed a vast repertoire of revived popular folk songs, dance music and poetry in local dialect, managing to retain all the traditional communicative characteristics of the various compositions.

These include serenades, love songs, stornellos, tavern songs, songs of social content, narrative songs and descriptions of the farming calendar. The revived melodies are completed by some really innovative pieces, composed in the second half of the 20^th century, which show how deeply rooted traditional culture is in this area.

The various pieces of music are performed with a backing of an accordion and a classical guitar together with the introduction of ancient or unusual instruments, like castanets. The group, at present composed of about ten elements, has taken part in all the most important ethnic musical events in Italy, in Switzerland and in Austria, as well as appearing on television.
